Codenames: best strategies for the spymaster

Root's political geography means that the value of any territory changes based on the faction configuration at the table. A clearing with many woodland clearings adjacent is extremely valuable for the Alliance. The same clearing near a Marquise stronghold is territory you may choose to avoid. Reading the value of territory through the lens of what each faction needs is an intermediate Root skill.

The map's small size — eleven clearings — creates immediate contest for territory that does not exist in larger map games. Every clearing matters from the first turn. There is no uncontested territory to develop quietly before engaging with opponents.

For new Root players who feel overwhelmed by the geographic competition: focus on your faction's specific territory needs rather than general map control. Each faction has clearings it particularly values and clearings it does not need. Understanding your faction's geographic priorities reduces the decision space significantly.
