Flip-and-write vs roll-and-write: what's the difference?
Root's Mechanical Marquise 2.0 solo and two-player Automa creates a genuinely playable competitive experience against a bot opponent. The deck-driven bot actions are complex enough to require real strategic responses while being deterministic enough to feel fair rather than arbitrary.
The Clockwork expansion adds bots for all four base game factions plus the Underworld factions. This allows any configuration of human vs bot players across any faction combination. Two experienced humans each running one bot faction plus one human faction each creates a genuinely complex six-faction game.
For Root fans without regular gaming groups, the Clockwork Automa is one of the best competitive bot implementations in the hobby. It does not fully replicate the diplomatic complexity of a full human game but creates interesting tactical challenges that solo Root cannot provide otherwise.
