Indie labels doing the most interesting work right now
I've been tracking my Bandcamp purchases for two years and I want to share what I've learned about my own listening habits.
Of the 140 albums I've bought in that period, about 65% came from tag-based discovery — I went down a rabbit hole from one album to something adjacent. About 20% came from label pages I follow. About 10% came from recommendations in communities like this one. The remaining 5% I honestly can't trace back to a source.
The discovery method that correlates with the most-played purchases is community recommendation by a wide margin. The least often played are the tag discoveries, which suggests I'm better at finding things that are sonically adjacent to what I already like than I am at finding things I'll actually love.
The label-based discoveries are in the middle, which makes sense — I trust the labels I follow, but they don't always get it right.
What's your primary Bandcamp discovery method?
