Viking navigation: how did they cross the open Atlantic without instruments?

The Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD) is to Chinese civilization what the Roman Empire is to Western civilization: the foundational imperial model, the period of territorial consolidation, the golden age that later Chinese dynasties looked back to for legitimacy and inspiration.

The Han state developed the examination-based bureaucracy that would characterize Chinese governance for two millennia. The selection of officials through written examinations rather than hereditary right or military power — initially an idealized aspiration rather than consistent practice — became a defining feature of Chinese political theory. The Confucian curriculum that the examinations tested defined the content of elite education and shaped the values of the governing class.

Han expansion in all directions — into Central Asia (the Silk Road opened under Emperor Wu), into Vietnam, into Korea — created the territorial and cultural boundaries that defined subsequent Chinese civilization. The conquest of the Xiongnu confederation, the nomadic power that had threatened the Qin and early Han dynasties, involved both military campaigns and the strategic marriages and tribute payments that constituted 'heqin' (peace through kinship) diplomacy.

Han technology and material culture show an impressive range of innovation: paper (invented in the Han period), the magnetic compass in a primitive form, cast iron manufacturing, the seismograph. The Han population of approximately 60 million was the largest state population in the world at the time. The collapse of the Han — through a combination of court factional conflict, eunuch power, and the Yellow Turban Rebellion — led to four centuries of division that made the Tang reunification appear, in retrospect, as a restoration of the natural order.
