Ancient Greek athletics — the Olympic Games and the three other Panhellenic festivals at Delphi, Corinth, and Nemea — served functions well beyond sport in the full modern sense. They were religious festivals, demonstrations of aristocratic virtue, occasions for political diplomacy, and contexts for the commissioning of the poetry and sculpture that are among ancient Greece's greatest cultural achievements.

The Olympic Games, held every four years at Olympia in honor of Zeus, drew competitors from across the Greek world and provided one of the few occasions when warring city-states suspended hostilities (the Olympic truce, or ekecheiria). The games were open only to free Greek males; women were excluded from watching on pain of death (according to some sources), though this may be exaggerated. The Heraean Games at Olympia provided a separate competition for unmarried women.

Victory in the major games carried enormous social capital. Olympic victors received no monetary prize — only an olive wreath — but the celebration that followed was enormous: the victor's city might tear down a section of its walls to welcome him back (since a city with such citizens didn't need walls), commission a statue, and fund a victory ode by Pindar or Bacchylides. The ode was the primary literary form associated with athletic victory, and Pindar's odes are among the most technically accomplished poems in Greek literature.

The ancient ideal of athletic excellence (arete) was connected to military virtue: the javelin, discus, long jump, wrestling, and the hoplitodromos (a race in armor) all had obvious military applications. The pentathlon combined these events in a test of all-round physical excellence. Ancient sources debated whether athletic training enhanced or detracted from military preparation — the Spartans, famously, avoided the major Panhellenic games for periods because they considered professional athletics inconsistent with military training.
