The transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age was not simply a technological upgrade from one metal to another. The social and economic implications were profound: iron ore is far more widely distributed than tin (the scarce ingredient that makes bronze possible), and iron smelting, once mastered, can in principle be done anywhere with ore and wood for charcoal.
The result was a democratization of metallurgy. In the Bronze Age, the tin trade gave control of military technology to those who could access and control the tin supply routes. In the Iron Age, the barrier to metalworking was technical knowledge rather than raw material access. This had implications for the structure of warfare, trade, and political power.
The timing is complicated. Iron objects appear throughout the Bronze Age as prestige items, often made from meteoric iron. The systematic production of iron weapons and tools using bloomery furnaces seems to have developed in Anatolia around 1200 BC — coinciding with the Bronze Age collapse in a way that may not be coincidental. The disruption of Bronze Age trade networks may have forced the development of alternatives to bronze.
Steel — iron alloyed with small amounts of carbon through careful control of the smelting process — appears in some regions within a few centuries of the iron transition. Wootz steel from India and crucible steel from Central Asia represent the most sophisticated early metallurgical traditions. The transmission of steel-making knowledge along trade routes is still being mapped.
