What the deciphered texts contain is largely political history: royal succession, warfare, dynastic alliances, and ritual performance. The stelae and carved monuments that had seemed abstract are records of specific kings' deeds, dated precisely by the Long Count calendar. The historical depth this gives us for Classic Maya civilization — covering roughly 250-900 AD — is extraordinary.
