The Maya civilization presents one of the most challenging historiographical problems in the ancient Americas: a highly sophisticated culture with its own writing system that was largely destroyed by the Spanish conquest and only partially deciphered in the 20th century.

Maya writing — now approximately 85% deciphered following the breakthroughs of Yuri Knorozov, Tatiana Proskouriakoff, and many others — is a logosyllabic system combining logograms with phonetic syllabic signs. The decipherment revealed that Maya texts are primarily historical: records of dynastic succession, military campaigns, astronomical observations, and ritual performances, with specific dates in the Maya Long Count calendar.

Maya society at its Classic period peak (approximately 250–900 AD) consisted of dozens of independent city-states organized around royal courts. The major centers — Tikal, Calakmul, Palenque, Copan — competed diplomatically and militarily in a pattern that has been compared to the Greek poleis. The elaborate dynastic propaganda recorded in stone — recording accessions, victories, astronomical events, and ritual bloodletting by royalty — gives us an unusually detailed picture of elite Maya politics.

The Classic Maya collapse (approximately 800–950 AD) — the abandonment of the southern lowland cities over about 150 years — is one of the great historiographical puzzles. Evidence points to a combination of prolonged drought (confirmed by paleoclimate studies), interstate warfare intensification, agricultural degradation, and the breakdown of political authority. It was not a total collapse: Maya civilization continued in the northern Yucatan at Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and later Mayapan.
