Recent LiDAR survey results: how they're rewriting our maps of ancient sites
Archaeology's shift toward environmental and demographic history in the late 20th century has transformed what questions we can ask about ancient societies. The traditional focus on kings, battles, and monuments gave way to a history of landscapes, populations, and subsistence.
Isotope analysis of skeletal populations now allows us to reconstruct diet, migration patterns, weaning ages, and disease burden from material that couldn't speak at all under older methods. Zooarchaeology tells us about animal husbandry, hunting practices, and the trajectory of environmental change. Palynology — the analysis of ancient pollen preserved in lake sediments — reconstructs vegetation history and agricultural intensification across millennia.
The result is that we can now write a history of ancient climate, ancient public health, and ancient land use that doesn't depend on documentary sources — transformative for studying cultures that left no texts.
The methodological challenge is integrating this 'deep history' with the narrative political history that documentary sources provide. The two streams of evidence often don't connect cleanly, and the temptation to over-interpret the environmental evidence is real.
