The Scythians, known primarily from Herodotus and from spectacular archaeological finds in the Eurasian steppe, maintained complex political structures, sophisticated metalwork traditions, and long-distance exchange relationships. Scythian military technology — the composite bow, horse archery, cavalry tactics — was transformative. The ability to project lethal force from horseback while retreating was genuinely novel in the ancient world and proved effective against every Eurasian sedentary civilization that encountered it. Darius I's campaign against the Scythians in 513 BC was a disaster precisely because his army couldn't force a decisive engagement.

The interaction between nomadic and sedentary worlds was not simply predatory: steppe peoples provided horses, certain raw materials, and trade routes. Sedentary civilizations provided grain, luxury goods, and manufactured items. When steppe polities collapsed or became aggressive, overland trade contracted. The nomads weren't the enemies of ancient commerce; they were its gatekeepers.
