Catan: most dramatic trade negotiation
Root's map creates a specific geography that rewards different strategies depending on which corner you start in. The clearing network creates travel costs that asymmetrically affect different factions. The Marquise benefits from compact builds. The Alliance benefits from dispersed sympathy tokens. The Eyrie benefits from clearing adjacency for roost building.
The river creates a natural division of the map that affects early game development significantly. Factions starting near the river have more flexible movement options. Those starting in corners have more defensible positions but fewer connection points.
Understanding how your faction's starting position interacts with your strategy is an intermediate Root skill that develops naturally over four or five plays. Early plays involve learning faction mechanics. Later plays involve integrating geography into faction strategy.
