Codenames for non-gamers: success stories?
Gateway games serve a specific function in our hobby: they are the bridge between mass-market games and the actual depth of modern tabletop design. The best ones are genuinely good games in their own right, not just simplified introductions. Ticket to Ride, Catan, Pandemic — all of these hold up across dozens of sessions because the core mechanisms are sound.
The challenge with gateway games in 2024 is that the category has gotten much better. Wingspan is now a gateway game for many groups. Azul is unambiguously accessible. Century: Spice Road is faster and cleaner than either Catan or TTR. The floor has risen significantly.
My current recommendation depends on the group: for people who have never played hobby games at all, Catan or Ticket to Ride. For people who have played some games but are new to modern design, Wingspan or Azul. For people who want to jump to medium-weight, Everdell or Castles of Burgundy.
