7 Wonders: most points from military you've scored

Above and Below is the game that introduced narrative card reading to my gaming group in the most accessible way possible. The exploration mechanic — drawing an encounter card and having it read aloud before making a choice — creates genuine storytelling texture without requiring full narrative game investment. The worker placement core is familiar enough that the exploration feels like a bonus rather than an obligation.

Ryan Laukat's artistic vision is fully realized in Above and Below and its successor Near and Far. The world building is consistent and the adventure book writing is evocative. For groups interested in narrative gaming, these games are the best entry point short of Arkham Horror LCG.

For groups that want exploration narrative in a worker placement frame, Above and Below is the correct recommendation. It is lighter than its complexity suggests and creates warm session memories.
