I was today years old when I learned about Gloomhaven
Area control games create a particular kind of social tension because the aggression is explicit. You are not just competing for resources — you are physically displacing your opponents from territory. The best area control games channel that aggression into interesting strategic decisions rather than just rewarding the player willing to attack most aggressively.
Root does this through asymmetry — different factions have different tools for area control, making the game about matching your capabilities to the board state. Scythe does it through deterrence — the threat of combat shapes the game more than actual combat. Blood Rage does it through card drafting that determines who can fight effectively.
The genre requires players who are comfortable with direct conflict. If your group dislikes confrontation, cooperative games or euros with indirect competition will create a better experience.
