What Spirit Island do you recommend for a beginner?
Everdell's year structure — spring, summer, autumn, with each season bringing more workers and new cards — creates a natural pacing that makes the game feel complete even in shorter sessions. The spring turns feel exploratory. The autumn turns feel conclusive. The in-between turns feel like productive middle-game development.
The Pearlbrook expansion's river board and Fae cards add a second economy running parallel to the main board. The pearl resource creates a new acquisition curve that rewards visiting the river board without making it mandatory. The Fae cards add card effects more powerful than standard construction cards.
For new Everdell players, I recommend completing the base game several times before adding expansions. The base game teaches all the core principles well enough that expansions add to existing understanding rather than replacing it.
