Ark Nova vs Terraforming Mars — the eternal debate
Everdell's base game is charming but thin. The expansions are where the game becomes something worth talking about. Spirecrest adds a narrative journey mechanic and weather conditions that make each game feel different. Pearlbrook adds a river board with a separate resource economy. Bellfaire adds the market and fair events. Each one addresses something the base game lacks.
Rankings feel reductive because different expansions serve different needs. Spirecrest creates narrative texture and is my favorite addition for groups that play the game regularly. Pearlbrook adds the most mechanical complexity. Bellfaire is the most modular and works well for experienced players who want a lighter session.
New Leaf adds an in-game mayor mechanic that feels the most like a living community. Mistwood adds dungeons that create a risk-reward exploration layer. If you are building a complete Everdell collection, all of them together create an experience that looks overwhelming on the table but actually plays more smoothly than the box count suggests.
