7 Wonders Architects is worth understanding on its own terms rather than as a simplified 7 Wonders. It is a different game designed for different groups — faster, lighter, designed for families and casual groups rather than experienced hobbyists. The card drafting is simplified. The military is more central. The science victory is harder to pursue.

Criticisms that it is a dumbed-down 7 Wonders miss the point. It is not trying to be 7 Wonders. It is trying to be a game with the 7 Wonders theme that works in 20 minutes for players who find the original too complex.

For your collection decision: if you play primarily with experienced gamers, own 7 Wonders or 7 Wonders Duel. If you play frequently with mixed groups including children and non-gamers, Architects earns its place as a faster alternative.
