Two-player game recommendations for couples

Pandemic: Iberia is the best standalone Pandemic variant and I will stand behind that opinion. The railroads-versus-roads movement structure forces different routing decisions than the base game. The water purification mechanic adds a research dimension that the base game lacks. The historical theme — 19th century Europe — is more thematically coherent than the generic modern health crisis of the base game.

It plays with the standard Pandemic mechanics so previous experience transfers directly. New players can jump in without prior knowledge. The difficulty is calibrated well — slightly harder than base Pandemic in its default configuration.

For groups that have exhausted the base Pandemic and want more without committing to Legacy, Iberia is the best next purchase. It is also the Pandemic I would use to introduce the game to a new group if I could only have one version.
