Codenames Pictures is the variant I recommend for groups that struggle with word association. The pictorial clue-giving creates a different kind of ambiguity — images suggest multiple interpretations simultaneously, making clever clues harder to give but also harder to misinterpret catastrophically. The lateral thinking required differs from the verbal reasoning of standard Codenames.

For groups with mixed verbal ability — including non-native speakers or players with word-finding difficulty — Pictures creates a more equitable experience. The visual clue-giving levels the playing field in ways that pure word games cannot.

Both versions are worth owning for different group contexts. I use standard Codenames with groups that enjoy wordplay. Pictures is my recommendation for mixed groups or for groups that have played standard Codenames enough that they want a genuinely different challenge.
