Blood Rage is the best area control game in my collection for groups that want direct conflict. The card drafting before each age determines which combat strategies are available. The combat mechanic — which values you commit without knowing your opponent's values — creates genuine tension. The death mechanic, where losing units score glory in Valhalla, makes even losing worth planning for.

The monster sculpts are extraordinary. The production value is CMON-level, which means both exceptional component quality and a price point that reflects it. The Kickstarter edition with additional content is the version most players own, which has created some availability confusion for retail buyers.

For groups new to area control games, Blood Rage is more accessible than it looks. The age structure keeps the game from dragging. The death mechanic removes the frustration of having your forces wiped out. The combat resolution is fast once learned.
