Controversial: Ticket to Ride peaked years ago

Wingspan's core loop — choose a habitat, take the corresponding action, activate all birds in that habitat — is immediately learnable and surprisingly deep. The simplicity of the turn structure means new players can act quickly. The depth of the bird interactions means experienced players still find interesting decisions after 50 plays.

The three habitat types create three distinct game styles within a single session. Forest-focused play builds resources and cached goods. Grassland-focused play builds egg economy and bird variety. Wetland-focused play builds card draw and hand management. Balancing all three creates the strongest positions but specializing in two creates more focused engines.

For groups that want to introduce Wingspan optimally: tell new players there are three habitats, each does something different, and their first goal is to fill all three with at least two birds each. This creates balanced starting positions that allow the engine to develop naturally.
