The conservation project cards that require animal collections create mandatory set collection goals. Projects that match your zoo's species focus score well. Projects that require species you have not been building toward force a strategy pivot. Evaluating conservation projects against your existing animal portfolio is the planning horizon that determines late-game efficiency.

For new Ark Nova players who find the end game feels chaotic: start evaluating conservation projects from round three rather than waiting until they are affordable. The animals you need to complete projects should influence which animal cards you prioritize from early drafts.
