Kingmaking in competitive games — when and why it happens
Dune: Imperium is the game that converted several members of my group from euro skeptics. The deck building and worker placement hybrid creates a decision density that feels engaging without being overwhelming. The influence track and factions create political texture that pure worker placement games lack. The combat resolution is tense and makes the worker placement decisions feel consequential.
The Dune theme helps significantly for people who know the source material. For people who do not, the game stands on its own but the faction flavor is less resonant.
Rise of Ix and Immortality are both excellent expansions that add mechanical depth without bloating the game. They are worth adding once your group has played the base game to competency. The Uprising standalone is an improvement on the base game and is worth considering as the version to own.
