Ark Nova's zoo building mechanic is tactilely satisfying in a way I did not expect. Placing animals, building enclosures, managing the space constraints of your zoo map — it creates a physical puzzle that makes the game feel present and real in a way that pure card games sometimes do not.

The action card system — five action cards that refresh based on where you placed them in the row — is one of the most interesting tempo systems in modern game design. Learning to manage the order of your action card refreshes is the game's deepest skill. Early plays, this system feels like an obstacle. Later plays, it feels like an instrument.

Solo Ark Nova is one of the best solo experiences available in the hobby. The Automa is well-designed, the scoring target creates appropriate challenge, and the zoo layout puzzle is just as engaging without opponents competing for cards.
