PSA: pull-up tip that saved me

Building the Foundation for Muscle-Ups

Most people approach the muscle-up as a single skill to achieve. It's actually three distinct capacities that need to be developed simultaneously: pulling strength, transition technique, and pushing strength.

Pulling strength: the bar needs to reach hip height on a strict muscle-up, chest height at minimum on a kipping. This requires pull-up capacity of at least 10-12 strict reps with full range. Chest-to-bar pull-ups are the most direct strength development.

Transition technique: this is the hardest part to develop in isolation. Muscle-up negatives from above the bar teach the transition pattern eccentrically. Low bar muscle-ups with foot touch allows practice of the actual transition with reduced load.

Pushing strength: a bar dip is the push phase. If you can't do 5-8 bar dips, you'll stall at the top of the muscle-up even when you get there. Build parallel bar dips to at least 3x8 before focusing heavily on muscle-up attempts.

When all three are present, the muscle-up tends to come together quickly — often within a few weeks of dedicated practice once the components exist.
