Breathing for the L-Sit and Compression Holds

Breathing during the L-sit is harder than it sounds. The compression required for the L-sit directly competes with the diaphragm's movement. Here's how to manage it.

The problem: the L-sit requires active hip flexor contraction and abdominal bracing. These same muscles are involved in forced exhalation and inhalation. When you fully engage them for the L-sit, breathing becomes mechanically constrained.

The learning progression: begin with short holds (5-10 seconds) where you don't need to breathe. As holds extend past 15 seconds, learn to take shallow breaths without relaxing the position. The technique is to breathe high in the chest (thoracic breathing) rather than diaphragmatically.

Long holds: for holds over 30 seconds, some practitioners maintain tension through the exhale and inhale in small increments. It never feels comfortable, but it becomes manageable with practice.

The V-sit: breathing in a V-sit is even harder due to greater compression. If V-sit holds are limited by the ability to breathe rather than hip flexor strength, the breathing technique is the training priority.
