I want to recommend reading the complete works of a writer you like as a long-term project. Not the backlist in one burst — that produces diminishing returns and eventually backlash against a writer you love. I mean the sustained engagement over years that lets you trace the development of a mind.

I've been reading Le Guin completely and slowly for eight years. I've read all the Earthsea books, most of the Hainish cycle, the three collections of short stories, the essays, the poetry collections. The arc of her thinking is visible in a way that no individual book makes available. The early work is confident in ways the later work questions. The later work is braver in ways the early work couldn't have been.

The experience of a complete reading is different from any individual reading. It's a portrait of a mind at work across fifty years.
