I spent a year reading only books in translation and at the end of it I had a different relationship with the concept of a book. Translation is interpretation. The translator makes decisions the reader never sees — which connotation of a word, which syntactic rhythm, which register. The book you read in translation is the translator's reading of the book.

The best translators are co-authors in a real sense. Edith Grossman's Cervantes and García Márquez are different from other translators' versions and I would argue better. Jenny Erpenbeck's recent novels in Michael Hofmann's translations are the reason I know her name at all.

The question of whether the translator's name should appear on the cover alongside the author's is no longer controversial to me. It should. The translator made the book you're reading.
