Budget city guide: Porto, Portugal
The question of what to do in the 48 hours before a long budget trip to ensure it goes smoothly.
Document preparation: scan or photograph your passport, visa, insurance policy, and any booking confirmations. Upload to a cloud service and/or email to yourself. If your physical documents are lost or stolen, you have digital copies for emergency re-issuance.
Bank notification: notify your primary bank that you'll be traveling in specific countries. Most banks now do this via app. This prevents card holds when you suddenly start spending in Vietnam. Note: some banks auto-detect foreign transactions now and no longer require notification, but doing it takes 2 minutes and prevents a potential day of card-blocked stress.
Medication check: if you're on any prescription medication, verify you have enough for the entire trip plus 2 weeks buffer. Confirm it's properly labeled (original pharmacy container) for crossing borders.
Download offline content: Google Maps offline for your first destination(s), offline translation packs for destination languages, any books or podcasts for long transit days.
Pack check: lay out everything the night before. Weigh the bag if you're on a strict carry-on-only budget airline. Anything over 10kg (22 lbs) for a 40L bag is probably overpacked.
Cash preparation: have some destination currency or USD for the first 24 hours. Airport ATMs often have higher fees; the initial cash covers transport to accommodation until you find a fee-free ATM in the city.
