The definitive visa tier list

The complete process for finding a Workaway placement that will actually be good, rather than just available.

Step 1: Know what you want. Are you looking for urban or rural? Physically demanding or mentally demanding? Social environment with many volunteers or quiet with just you and a host family? Fixed daily schedule or flexible? Listing these preferences before searching prevents selecting placements that are technically fine but wrong for you.

Step 2: Search broadly, filter rigorously. Workaway has thousands of listings. Search by country or region, then filter by categories that match your skills and interests. Read descriptions carefully for red flags: listings with vague task descriptions, unusually long expected work hours (anything claiming more than 6 hours/day is a policy violation), listings that have been inactive (last login date is visible).

Step 3: Read reviews in full. Star ratings are insufficient. Read the 5-10 most recent reviews for specific information: 'Tasks as described? Yes. Daily schedule flexible? Moderately. Accommodation comfortable? Yes, private room. Host communication before arrival? Excellent.' Reviews that are enthusiastic but vague ('amazing experience!') tell you nothing. Reviews with specific details tell you everything.

Step 4: Message the host before accepting. Ask directly: what does a typical day look like, what are the sleeping arrangements, are there currently any other volunteers? A host who responds quickly with specific answers and seems engaged is a good sign. A host who responds with a form email or takes a week to reply is a yellow flag.

Step 5: Have a backup plan. If the placement turns out to be misrepresented (it happens), know in advance that you can leave. You're not indentured. Legitimate placements have no penalties for leaving; keep some savings buffer for the hostel you'll stay in while you transition.
