How to find Couchsurfing hosts who are actually active

Let me tell you about the time I got travel insurance right, because the stories about it going wrong are more common in the discourse.

I was trekking in Nepal in 2023. Two days into the Annapurna Circuit, I slipped on a wet trail section and fractured my ankle. Not a dramatic fall — just an awkward step on a wet rock. Can't weight-bear, 12km from the nearest road.

The evacuation: helicopter from Ghorepani to Kathmandu. The policy (World Nomads Standard, paid $78 for 3 weeks) covered helicopter evacuation up to $500,000. Actual cost of the evacuation was $3,200. Covered in full.

The medical treatment in Kathmandu: private clinic, X-rays, temporary casting, consultation. Cost: $420. Covered minus my $100 deductible.

The flight change: I had to delay my return flight by 10 days. The policy covered the change fee ($180) and the difference in fare ($95). Covered.

Total covered: approximately $3,815. My out-of-pocket including the deductible and some pharmacy costs: $185.

The claim process: World Nomads has a straightforward online claims portal. I submitted hospital receipts, a doctor's letter, and the evacuation company's invoice. Reimbursement came in 18 days. No battle, no runaround.
