Skip Santorini: cheaper Greek islands that are just as beautiful

Budget travel with minimal environmental impact: the honest assessment of what makes a difference and what doesn't.

What makes a meaningful difference: flying less. Aviation is the single largest contributor to travel carbon footprint. One transatlantic round-trip flight produces roughly 1.5-2 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per passenger. Slow travel that maximizes time per trip reduces total flights per year and per destination.

Overland vs flying: taking trains and buses instead of flights within a continent has a dramatic carbon advantage — trains produce roughly 5-10% of the emissions per passenger-km compared to aviation. The budget travel habit of using overnight trains and buses rather than flying between Southeast Asian cities is incidentally lower-impact.

What doesn't make much difference: reusable water bottles prevent plastic bottle waste (meaningful at the local pollution level) but don't significantly affect global emissions. Staying in locally owned guesthouses vs international chains has economic impact (money stays in local economy) but minimal direct environmental impact.

The honest paradox: budget travel done right involves flying less per trip (by extending trips and using surface transport) and spending money more locally, both of which are environmentally and economically favorable compared to resort-style tourism. The carbon cost of the initial intercontinental flight remains high regardless.

The carbon offset option: offsetting flight emissions through high-quality carbon projects (Gold Standard certified) costs $10-20 per tonne, so $15-30 for a return transatlantic flight. Whether offsets are effective is genuinely debated; direct funding of forest protection projects (not planting trees) has a stronger evidence base.
