The house-sitting learning curve has distinct phases and knowing what to expect at each phase makes the experience less frustrating.
Phase 1 (applications 1-10, usually the first 3-6 months): you apply to everything and get accepted for almost nothing. Your profile has no reviews. Hosts can't assess you. Persistence in this phase is the only path through it. Target sits: January-March in northern Europe, rural areas in any country, sits with no pets (easier for first-timers), sits under 2 weeks.
Phase 2 (first 3 reviews acquired): your application success rate improves significantly. You can now apply for sits in popular cities and get genuine consideration. The competition for popular sits (central London, Paris, anywhere with a photogenic dog) is still fierce, but you're now in the running.
Phase 3 (5+ reviews, consistent positive feedback): hosts seek you out. The TrustedHousesitters 'apply' system includes a feature where homeowners can invite specific sitters. Hosts who've seen your profile or received a recommendation start messaging you proactively. This changes the dynamic entirely.
Phase 4 (10+ reviews, 2+ years on the platform): you have a reputation. You can afford to be selective. At this stage I decline sits where the host communications feel unclear or where the listing description raises questions. With enough reviews you have negotiating leverage that new sitters don't.
The average time to reach Phase 3: 12-18 months for travelers who sit 3-4 times per year. Faster if you prioritize building the profile.
