Budget travel in Central America: a completely honest safety assessment by country as of 2025.

Guatemala: largely safe for tourist circuits. Antigua, Lake Atitlán, Semuc Champey, Tikal — these areas have strong tourist infrastructure and incidents are uncommon. Guatemala City is the genuine exception: don't linger, transfer quickly between the airport and buses. The Petén jungle for Tikal has a different risk profile (isolated) — use reputable transport and stay in El Remate or Flores, not jungle guesthouses without reviews.

Belize: the safest Central American country overall. Crime exists (Belize City has rough areas, avoid after dark) but the tourist islands and western highway sites are comfortable. The prices are in USD and significantly higher than the rest of Central America — the safety comes with a cost premium.

Honduras: Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula have genuine high-crime areas. The tourist sites — Copán ruins, the Bay Islands (Roatán, Utila) — are separate infrastructurally and much safer. Route around the major cities rather than through them.

Nicaragua: the political situation requires current research before visiting. The 2018 political crisis changed the traveler experience significantly. At time of writing, tourist areas (Granada, León, Corn Islands) are operational but the overall political context warrants checking recent traveler reports.

Costa Rica: the safest country on the route and the most expensive. Petty theft is the primary issue in tourist areas (Jacó, La Fortuna, Manuel Antonio). Use secure lockers, don't leave things in rental cars.

El Salvador: has transformed more rapidly than international coverage suggests. The gang crackdown since 2022 has made tourist areas dramatically safer. El Tunco and the coast, El Imposible National Park, Santa Ana — now genuinely accessible for budget travelers with appropriate awareness.
