My budget Datsun 240Z build: $8,000 all-in, including purchase

The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am in its 1970 and 1971 configurations is one of the most analytically undervalued cars of the era. The Trans Am package added functional aerodynamics, a Ram Air engine, and suspension tuning that put the Firebird in a different category than the base car.

The white and blue color scheme is specific to the Trans Am package and is the visual signature of the car. The shaker hood scoop on the Ram Air cars is functional — it feeds cold air directly to the carburetor.

The early Trans Ams are priced reasonably compared to equivalent Camaros Z/28s, despite offering similar or superior performance capability. The Pontiac brand penalty that applies to the GTO applies here too — and represents the same opportunity.
