My complete suspension rebuild on a 1970 GTO — parts and process
My approach to sourcing a project car has changed significantly over twenty years. The things I prioritize today are almost the inverse of what I prioritized as a young buyer.
Then: I wanted the rarest option combination, the numbers-matching drivetrain, the most desirable configuration. I bought projects based on what they could be.
Now: I want the most complete, most rust-free body I can find, regardless of option content. Options can be sourced. Rust cannot be selectively removed — when the structure is compromised, everything is more difficult and more expensive.
The body defines what the project will cost. The drivetrain defines what the project will be worth when it's finished. A great body with a wrong engine is a better starting point than a numbers-matching car with a compromised structure.
