The right way to break in a freshly rebuilt classic engine

The GTO Judge deserves a more nuanced discussion than it usually gets. The Judge was a marketing package, not an engineering advancement — it came at the height of the muscle car era when every manufacturer was racing to out-nameplate the competition.

The Ram Air III and Ram Air IV engines in Judge trim were serious. The bodywork was polarizing — the stripes and spoiler were not subtle. And the name itself came from a comedy sketch, which is either charming or embarrassing depending on your perspective.

What the Judge represents is the peak of a specific era: maximum performance, zero compromise, no thought given to fuel economy or insurance rates. It's a time capsule. Drive one and you understand why that era ended.
