The correct torque sequence and specification for cylinder head bolts on a small-block Chevrolet is one of the most commonly consulted specifications in the hobby, and getting it wrong is one of the most common causes of head gasket failure.
The factory sequence works from the center bolts outward in a spiral pattern. This sequence allows the head to conform to the block deck surface evenly without creating stress concentrations. Torquing the outer bolts first pulls the head down unevenly and creates a hinge point at the center.
For stock cast iron heads with the factory head bolts: 65 lb-ft in the correct sequence, in three equal increments. For aftermarket aluminum heads or heads with head studs: follow the manufacturer's specification because the aluminum and stud requirements differ from the factory spec.
