The 1968 Dodge Charger's hidden headlamp system is one of the most distinctive design elements of the muscle car era and one of the most maintenance-intensive.

The vacuum-actuated doors that cover and uncover the headlamps are operated by engine vacuum. As vacuum system components age, the doors can operate slowly, fail to open fully, or fail to open at all. The vacuum pods, lines, and the control circuit all need to be in good condition for the system to work correctly.

Conversion to electric actuation is a common modification — the vacuum pods are replaced with small electric actuators. The system becomes more reliable and the hidden headlamp aesthetic is preserved. For a correct restoration, rebuilding the original vacuum system is the right answer.
