The car show judging system varies enormously between events and understanding the criteria before you show up matters more than people realize.

Concours events judge originality, correctness, and condition. Every deviation from factory specification is a point deduction. The judges have reference materials and they use them. If your car has the wrong date-coded carburetor or aftermarket valve covers, it will score lower than a car with correct components in worse overall condition.

Best-of-show events at cruise nights and smaller shows judge by popular vote. The crowd loves a high-impact car — bright color, dramatic stance, clean presentation. Originality matters less than visual appeal.
