The correct way to rebuild a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor

Understanding the difference between a frame-off and a numbers-matching restoration matters for both the buyer and seller of a restored classic.

Numbers-matching refers to the drivetrain: the engine, transmission, and rear axle (in some marques) should carry date codes and VIN derivatives that identify them as original to the car. The numbers-matching status of a car is a factual question with a documentable answer.

Frame-off refers to the restoration method: the body was removed from the frame and both were restored separately. This is a claim about how the work was done, not about the car's originality. A frame-off restoration of a non-matching car can be beautifully executed. A numbers-matching car can have been poorly maintained or partially restored in the original body-on configuration.

Both terms matter, and neither term implies the other.
