Why I put a Dana 60 axle under my Chevelle SS

The first-generation Pontiac Firebird has always lived in the Camaro's shadow, and it's time to reassess that relationship.

The Firebird and Camaro shared the F-body platform and many major components, but Pontiac's engineering team took the car in a different direction. The Firebird had more standard content, Pontiac's own powerplants (including the excellent 400 cubic inch engine), and a more refined character that appealed to a different buyer.

The 1967-1969 cars are the sweet spot. The Ram Air III and Ram Air IV 400s are Pontiac at its performance peak. The 1969 Trans Am package — white with blue stripes, functional spoilers, Ram Air III or IV — is one of the most handsome American cars of the era.

Values remain reasonable compared to equivalent Camaros. The window is closing.
