The electrical system in a 1960s American car is simple by modern standards, but simple doesn't mean reliable when the components are 60 years old.

The factory used 12-volt positive-ground systems through the mid-1950s, then switched to negative-ground. By the early 1960s, all major domestic manufacturers were on negative-ground 12-volt systems. The wiring was adequate for the original electrical loads — lights, starter, ignition, basic accessories.

The problem isn't the design, it's the age. Insulation becomes brittle. Connections corrode. Grounds loosen. The fusible links that protect major circuits degrade silently until they fail catastrophically. A complete rewire is the correct solution for any car over 40 years old that you plan to drive regularly. It's not optional if you care about the car's longevity and your safety.
