Clip Studio appreciation post

The subject of speedpainting as a form specifically — not just painting quickly — is worth examining because it has its own aesthetic logic that differs from conventional digital painting.

Speedpainting's constraints: typically thirty minutes to two hours. The constraint forces prioritization. You paint the most important things first. If time runs out, the painting is still complete — it contains the essential reads, just without the finer details.

The visual aesthetic of speedpainting: loose brushwork, visible marks, impression over exactitude. This is not a deficiency of time but a visual quality in its own right. Many artists prefer the energy of speedpaint work to fully-rendered work.

Practice value: the speed constraint converts the 'what do I paint first?' question into a reflex rather than a deliberation. After enough speedpaint sessions the priority order — major shapes, value structure, primary color, focal detail — becomes automatic.
