Painting ice and snow: the reflective surface problem
I want to discuss the process of building a repeating pattern in Procreate because it's a more specialized workflow that requires specific setup to work correctly.
The wrap-around approach: Procreate doesn't have a native tileable canvas mode, but there's a workaround. I paint on a canvas that's exactly twice the target tile size. Anything that extends off the right edge I copy and paste to the left edge at the same position, and vice versa for top and bottom. This manual wrap-around produces a seamlessly tileable pattern.
Krita's approach is better for this: the wrap-around mode (activated in the View menu) automatically wraps the canvas, so you can paint and see the tile seamlessly in real time.
The design challenge in pattern work: the pattern must be visually interesting while also having a balanced visual weight across the tile. Unbalanced patterns have areas of high and low density that create a grid-like visual rhythm when tiled. The goal is density variation that doesn't resolve into an obvious grid.
