I want to discuss the experience of working with a creative director or art director on a long-term project, because the relationship is different from a one-off commission.

Building working shorthand: over the course of a longer project, I develop visual shorthand with the art director. They learn what I need in a brief to produce good work; I learn their visual language well enough to anticipate notes before they're made.

Managing creative disagreements: when I think a direction they want will weaken the work, I say so specifically and once. I provide an alternative. If they choose their original direction anyway, I execute it as well as possible. I don't argue past one round of advocacy.

The long-term dynamic: the best working relationships I've had with art directors involved mutual education. I learned from their broader project context; they learned from my perspective on what was achievable and what was visually effective. The work was better than either of us would have produced without the other's input.
