My speedpaint setup: screen recording, audio, time-lapse settings
The experience of taking a digital art break — deliberately not drawing for a month — was something I did once out of exhaustion and want to document because the effects were surprising.
Month one: the first week felt uncomfortable. The second week felt free. The third week I started noticing visual things more consciously — light patterns, interesting colors, compelling compositions in ordinary scenes — because I wasn't trying to translate them into drawings. The observation sharpened without the expression pressure.
Returning to drawing: my first session back felt clumsy and then surprisingly good. The technical skill hadn't degraded noticeably. But something about the quality of my observation had improved. I was seeing more before picking up the stylus.
Conclusion: a deliberate break is not failure. It can be a component of the practice, especially if it coincides with a period of intensive visual observation. Rest is part of skill development, not the absence of it.
