Shoutout to everyone who helped me with Procreate

Question

The subject of developing a consistent illustration series — multiple pieces with shared visual DNA — is one I want to document because series work has different creative demands from standalone pieces.

The challenge of consistency: you need to make the same aesthetic decisions repeatedly across pieces. This sounds simple until you realize how many implicit decisions you make automatically in solo work that need to be explicit and locked-in for a series.

I create a series style guide before starting: dominant colors (the palette is bounded, not infinite), rendering approach (how detailed, how graphic), subject selection rules, composition principles, format and size.

The creative challenge: the constraints that make a series coherent also limit what you can do within it. The best series work I've seen finds interesting variation within tight constraints. The worst series work tries to expand the constraints over time and loses the series identity.
