Why I switched from pixel art to Procreate

Meta

I want to share what I've learned about painting backgrounds after years of finding them the most difficult and least satisfying part of illustration work.

The root of my background problem: I was treating them as containers for the foreground subject rather than as subjects in their own right. When a background is designed to not compete with the foreground, it ends up being designed to be boring. That's not the same as being designed to be restrained.

The shift: I started designing backgrounds with a specific mood and spatial story. What does this place feel like? What time of day? What has happened here? Even when the background is soft and atmospheric, there's an intention behind it.

The second thing that helped: painting dedicated background studies with no foreground subject. Just the space, as its own painting. This forced me to find what was interesting about a space without relying on a character to do the visual work.

Backgrounds improved faster than any other part of my work once I started treating them as primary rather than secondary.
