DAE actually enjoy 3D?
I've been keeping track of the specific moments in my development where something clicked — where a concept that had been intellectual suddenly became felt in the practice. Here are the most significant ones.
Light temperature: I intellectually knew about warm light and cool shadows for two years before a specific afternoon painting session where I was looking at a lamp and I felt the orange of the light and the blue-grey of the shadow simultaneously and understood them as one system. After that I never confused myself about temperature again.
Silhouette first: I read about this in multiple books. I tried it and it seemed useful. Then I made a character where the silhouette was weak and spent three hours failing to make it work with detail. The failure made the principle visceral in a way the reading never had.
Value before color: I started every painting in color until one failed painting pushed me to try the grayscale-first approach out of desperation. It worked so dramatically that the lesson stuck immediately.
The pattern: principles become real through failure first, then success. Reading about them helps but doesn't substitute for the experiential learning.
